Drill Sergeant was originally called Drillbot. His original design required him to pick up his Drill Rockets each time he fired them. It soon became apparent that this was no fun.
The Drill Rockets bear some resemblance to the Fire-and-forget nuclear missiles on the Earthling Cruisers in Star Control 2. Nat Loh recalls that Drill Sergeant was particularly difficult to design, requiring many more redesign cycles than some of the other characters .
Drill Sergeant was built and programmed to follow orders, which leads him to call everyone "sir", which irritates some of his comrades. He follows the rules to the letter, never hesitating until the job is done.
As a valued member of the Skylanders, he is a loose machine, answerable to no one, but the old ways of his Arkeyan programming have yet to diminish. Like all Tech Skylanders, Drill Sergeant is fascinated by machines.
Biography
Like many Arkeyan artifacts, Drill Sergeant has been buried for centuries - a long forgotten remnant of a mighty ancient civilization. It was only a chance collision with a burrowing Terrafin that caused his systems to reboot. According to Arkeyan custom, Drill Sergeant was then obliged to become Terrafin's servant.
This didn't sit well with the Dirt Shark, so his first order as master was that the drill sergeant not serve him at all...an order he continues to follow zealously to this day.
Story
Drill Sergeant is an ancient device from Arkeyan, once left to rust underground. Thousands of years later, the Skylands land shark, Terrafin, was burrowing into the dirt when it bumped into something solid.
Terrafin pulled the artifact above the ground and dragged it to show Master Eon. Eon mumbled some magic phrases. There was a click, then a whirlwind, and then... KACHUNK! The drill sergeant came to life with blazing lights and a revving engine, the drill sergeant turned his attention to Terrafin. According to Arkeyan law, he has sworn to serve the shark for eternity.
Terrafin's first order was simple: "STOP FOLLOWING ME." But it's the one that Drill Sergeant found difficult to calculate.
With no Arkeyan in sight, the drill sergeant found Skylands a bit insane. So Eon enrolled him, and his drills are now used for deadly blows against evil
