The Mega Drive, or Genesis in North America, is a fourth-generation video game console designed and marketed by Japanese manufacturer Sega Enterprises, Ltd. The Mega Drive is Sega's third console, succeeding the Master System.
Sega first released the console in Japan as the Mega Drive in 1988, the console was then released in 1989 in North America, renamed Genesis in that territory. In 1990, the console was released in most other territories as Mega Drive.
Designed by a research and development team supervised by Masami Ishikawa, the hardware of the Mega Drive is adapted from System 16 for arcade machines.
The system supports a toy library of over 900 games created by Sega and a wide range of third-party publishers, released as a video game cartridge.
