“It hit my horse. He hit my charging horse. - Sir Antonus von Königstadt
Unlike the elegant biomantic processes and techniques used in the development of creations like the Marksman Clone, the Brute Drone reflects the Spiers' callous disregard for the suffering of their creations.
Selected from the least imperfect drones to use as cannon fodder, future Brutes are taken and put through a ruthlessly efficient testing process, to see if their bodies can survive the stress of transformation. Those who fail this test are only suitable for recycling biomass.
For those who survive, this invasive procedure ends with would-be clones being encased in the massive armor they will wear for the rest of their lives, however short that may be.
They're lowered, armor and all, into a vat full of hyper-aggressive muscle and bone augmentation agents. Combined with growth hormone treatments, the results are impressive, although limited.
Body mass can triple in just two months of immersion, but the pain and trauma of the process severely impairs the drones' already limited mental faculties.
The massive armors they are immersed in are soon completely filled, stunting their growth and causing increasing pain to the fledgling Brutes. Once the pain is severe enough to overcome the sedative agents added to the vat mix, the Brute is considered adult and decanted, before its wild strikes harm the rest of the batch.
The process could be much more compassionate and efficient, but time and practice have shown it to be the most resource-efficient method for developing these frontline shock troops. The monstrously high failure rate among junior drones is more than offset by the dramatically reduced cost and oversight.
Towering well over two meters, with most specimens touching the three meter mark, Brute Drones are a towering mass of vat-developed muscle and aggression. Their skin, visible beneath the ichor-soaked bandages they wear, is a ravaged mass of scar tissue and subcutaneous bone deposits.
Their armor is literally sealed to their body, held in place by alchemically processed canisters that establish the lineage ownership, batch number, and upgrade date of the particular drone.
On the battlefield, Brute Drones are little more than living battering rams. As a result, they are always deployed in conjunction with a Pheromancer, whose powerful pheromonal commands are the only thing that can break the fog of pain and rage that clouds their minds.
