After a successful college hockey career, Caufield made his NHL debut as an emergency call-up in 2021.
He quickly became the third NHL player in history to score his first two career goals in overtime and ultimately appeared in twenty games with four goals and eight assists.

His 40 goals in his first 100 games were the fourth most for a Canadiens player in the previous ninety years and holds the record for most points by a Canadiens rookie in overtime during a playoff year. Caufield was named the March 2022 NHL Rookie of the Month.
