In the 1940s, college student Jay Garrick gained his superspeed abilities in a random lab accident and became DC's first superhero to go by the name Flash.
Years later, Jay was replaced by detective scientist Barry Allen, until Barry's former partner, Wally West, took over at a time when Barry was thought to be dead.
But, when Barry returned, he became the Flash again. All three generations of speedsters were founding members of the Justice Society and the Justice League.
