In addition to the Joy-Cons, you can use the Pro Controller (sold separately) to play Nintendo Switch. This controller lets you play comfortably when the console is in TV mode or tabletop mode.
When using the console in TV mode, you can connect the Pro Controller to the docking station using the USB charging cable (HAC-010) to sync or charge it.
